What Are Loose Parts?
Loose parts are open-ended materials that children can move, combine, redesign, take apart, and put back together in a multitude of ways. These materials — such as natural objects like sticks, stones, pinecones, shells, and acorns, along with manufactured items like buttons, fabric scraps, bottle caps, and tubes — give children unlimited possibilities to create, explore, and learn through play.
Why Loose Parts Matter at TLC
At TLC, we integrate loose parts into our Reggio Emilia-inspired environments because they encourage children to use their imagination, develop critical thinking, and engage in hands-on learning. There is no "right" way to use loose parts — they empower children to lead their own explorations and express their ideas in unique, creative ways.
